Break-In at Kalach College of Engineering By Ludwig von Hayek At 5:25 A.M. this morning the Kavyat police were called to Building #3 at Kalach Engineering College after arriving faculty discovered there had been a break-in overnight. Security footage showed three figures wearing grey hoodies and black ski masks entering into the building through a side door, covering security cameras with black spray paint as they went. A list of stolen items has not yet been released, but the current damage estimate is £P 26,000 of equipment stolen and a further £P 6,500 in damages to college property. At least one of the perpetrators is believed to be a student at the college due to their use of an official keycard to open several secure doors. Pawn shops, libraries, and other secondhand dealers are advised to carefully determine the origin of any scientific equipment or textbooks customers attempt to sell them.
15th Annual Sailboat Race Delayed Yet Again By Eric Dragoon The 15th annual Bay Circuit Sailboat Race has been pushed back for a third time, from the 15th to the 19th. The delay is due to concerns from the Federal Navy about the Z.M.S. Monserrati, a Zamastanian Navy Crusier expected to dock in Kavyat Naval Base on that day. The Federal Navy fears the Zamastanian sailors may be unfamiliar enough with the race to cause damage or injury to race participants as they enter the harbor. This news has continued to sour the already low moods of the many citizens looking forward to the event, which was originally scheduled for the 9th, and has led to pushes against the Federal Navy and their concerns being labeled as overzealously cautious. Captain Dmitri Erbin, commander of Kavyat Naval Base, issued an official response to these complaints: "While I have the utmost confidence in the sailing skill of all participating racers and of the Monserrati's crew, the risk of injury, damage, or delay is too great when delaying the race is the alternative." Despite the outcry, the delay has been held and the race is planned to occur on Saturday the 19th, barring any further delays.
Subway Upgrade Plan Put in Motion By Katalina Margolin Kavyat's public subway system, first built in 1957, is finally getting a much-needed upgrade. 90% of the track is planned to be replaced along with all rolling stock (AKA the trains) purchased before 1995, or roughly 85% of the city's rolling stock. The majority of the stations will also be updated, including replacing any remaining analog ticket machines with digital ones and expanding the computer system to better display information to passengers. Mayor Alexi Soloveichuk, the main force behind the plan, has called it "...a desperately needed initiative that will revitalize the city." The upgrades are scheduled to be completed by 2025 and are expected to cost around £P1.7 billion to complete. No major transit delays are expected to occur until the second year and these will likely not last into the third year according to government officials.

Sinkhole Forms Under Railyard At 2:37 A.M. this morning, a 22 foot wide sinkhole formed underneath the Northpoint Railyard. The sinkhole, which is estimated to be between 35 and 40 feet deep, swallowed sections of three different tracks and 5 unloaded freight cars with many more track segments, freight cars, and a locomotive being damaged by the event. Nobody was injured but dozens of freight cars were derailed and the damage has placed a severe bottleneck on the Transnational Railroad as a whole.
Experts worry sinkholes will become increasingly common around Novada due to the above-average rainfall of the previous decade. Their predictions seem to be coming true as this is the third major sinkhole to form within one mile of Novada in the past two years. Efforts to predict future sinkholes are underway and Novada Emergency Services have begun preparing for sinkhole damage and injuries. Natalia Drevin
String of Car Vandalism Possibly Connected A recent spike in automobile vandalism is now believed to be an organized campaign. While police are unsure who is responsible, they believe many of the acts of vandalism were committed with the same tools, if not by the same exact people. While not all of their findings have been made public knowledge, we have been informed that the same screwdriver was used on at least 12 different cars, 2 semi trucks, and a police motorcycle. As for a reason why, police are still unsure. Residents are advised to keep a close eye on their vehicles and secure them inside if possible. Geoffrey Zemlin
City Residents Worried by New Cell Tower Residents of the Novada Plains, Olympia, and Hourglass Row apartment complexes submitted many complaints to the MAT Wireless Company over a new cell tower erected nearby their homes. They claimed the cell tower was interfering with electronics, causing insomnia, and aggravating pets among many other complaints. MAT Wireless representative Heinrich Zervik said, in an official statement: "While we sympathize with those experiencing the negative effects of our cell tower, you may just have to move away before we activate it in a week." We've been informed that the complaints stopped coming in almost entirely after he gave his statement. Truly a master of conflict resolution. Valko Kowalski

Whale Washes Up on Beach By Katalina Margolin Sections 15 and 16 of Kavyat's North Beach have been temporarily closed due to a sperm whale washing up on shore. The 56-foot long whale died at sea several days prior before the tides pushed it onto the shore around 5:30 A.M. Kavyat authorities have restricted the beach around the whale carcass while they determine the best way to remove it. Between 10 and 20 whales wash up on Kavyat's beaches annually and the city has ample experience with disposing of beached whale carcasses respectfully and efficiently. Residents are advised that whale disposal is a messy process and those without strong stomachs may wish to refrain from watching. The beach is expected to reopen by Tuesday, September 22nd.
Air Andaluni Crash Possibly Connected to Al-Jifar By Leon Merrick The recent crash of an Air Andaluni passenger plane into the Olympic Ocean, previously believed to be due to mechanical failure, is now believed to be a deliberate act of terrorism. Investigation of the wreckage and reports from the black box seem to indicate an explosion occurred within the cabin, leading to the crash. Reports of Al-Jifar chatter from just prior to the crash provided by the government of Saudi Jiddiya suggest a plan by the terrorist organization to destroy a plane, although a lack of specifics leaves any connection circumstantial at this time. Investigations by authorities from several countries including Andaluni, Quetana, Zamastan, and Emmiria are still ongoing.
Dockworkers Go on Strike By Johan Lehman Workers at docks #3, #4, and #7 at the Port of Kavyat have gone on strike, severely bottlenecking the port's activities. The main reason stated for the strike is anti-union activities by the port administration. One of the strike leaders, crane operator Brona Proksch, stated "They call themselves union-friendly and yet of the 32 workers laid off 5 months back, 27 were union members. And then when a hiring wave went out last month, over half of the new hires weren't affiliated with the union. This is the fifth time in as many years that this has happened and we have had enough!" Port representative Jana Radenovic responded in an official statement: "We fully respect our employees' right to unionize and these apparent hiring disparities are cherry-picked statistics." Negotiations between the port and the strike leaders are ongoing and it is currently unknown how long the strike will last.

Terrorist Attempts to Destroy Plane At 11:37 A.M. yesterday a terrorist onboard Omicron Airlines Flight U829 attempted to detonate an explosive device while the plane was at cruising altitude. Fortunately, the bomb failed to detonate, at which point he attempted to force his way into the cockpit and was apprehended by other passengers and the plane safely returned to Woronoff International Airport. The man, identified as Ahmad Suadya Mumaar, has been detained by the Hlavný Spravodajský Úrad and is currently being questioned as to the motives behind his attack. The Hlavný Spravodajský Úrad is working with the Úrad pre Letectvo to determine how attempted attacks like this one can be prevented in the future. Geoffrey Zemlin
Experts Predict Gas Prices Will Rise Before Lowering The recent rise in gas prices by 0.27 per gallon over the last two months isn't going to be the end of the price increase, says the team of economic experts interviewed by the Novada Central Post. The group, consisting of 5 college educated economists, represents a combined 90 years of general economic experience. They state that the underlying cause of the price increase, delayed renovations of a major pipeline and two major refineries, will continue to cause a steady price increase for another month at least, likely around another 0.15 total, before slowly lowering back down to around normal by the end of the year. Readers are advised that panic buying gasoline over this is not only preparing for an imaginary problem but, if enough do it, may cause a minor gas shortage in some areas. Fateena el-Jabour
Ania Molotov Dies after Prison Escape Attempt Infamous serial killer Ania Molotov, responsible for the deaths of 3 Novadan police officers, died in hospital early this morning from injuries sustained in an attempted escape from Green Rift Penitentiary. She, alongside fellow prisoners Darin Slifkin and Oliver Pernar, appears to have received outside help in escaping and managed to bypass several security measures before their escape was discovered and the prison entered lockdown. The group was found at the exit of a dry drainage tunnel they had crawled through to bypass the prison's outer wall. Oliver Pernar was found dead in the tunnel with a large wound to his head and Ania Molotov was found unconcious nearby with several similar wounds across her body. Darin Slifkin was not found and is at large. Natalia Drevin

Explosion at Naval Warehouse Injures 7 By Katalina Margolin Warehouse #31 at Kavyat Naval Yard experienced an ammunition detonation at 5:55 A.M. this morning which heavily damaged the warehouse, lightly damaged many surrounding structures, and started several fires. Seven people, five navy personnel and two civilian contractors, were injured by the explosion. The exact cause of the detonation is believed to be improper storage of high-caliber ammunition starting a chain reaction, although exact information has not yet been released. In response the Navy is planning a thorough examination of its storage procedures to ensure an accident like this does not occur again. An estimated 500 windows were damaged by the explosion, both in and around the naval yard, and the Navy has promised to pay for repairs to any window panes broken by the event.
Linden Street Overpass Closed Due to Accident By Johan Lehmen The Linden Street Overpass over Highway 88 has been closed for repairs due to damage caused by an accident yesterday. A Morningstar tanker truck struck the side of the bridge and rolled over, covering the upper and lower roadways in gasoline. While the majority of the gasoline has been cleaned up, repairs to the overpass cannot begin until fire investigators ensure the construction will not ignite any remaining gasoline. The overpass is expected to reopen on the 27th. Detour routes are Steele Street and Whitaker Street.
Environmentalist Art Exhibit Possibly Health Hazard By Marta Savenko The newest exhibit at the Vukadin Kruskal Art Gallery has been temporarily closed due to health concerns involving the composition of the exhibit's centerpiece: "What I've Become" by Iskren Cech, better known by his moniker "Zelený". The sculpture is a six-foot long scale model of a humpback whale calf made entirely of plastic garbage removed from the ocean. The health concerns arose when Zelený revealed on social media that several bottles included in the sculpture were found in the stomach of a dead whale calf shortly after the exhibit opened. As the museum had not been notified of this ahead of time, they shut down the exhibit to ensure no harmful substances remain on the sculpture. Zelený has expressed outrage at the closure of the exhibit, stating "I take every precaution necessary when I make my art. I am here to educate the public on the harm they're doing to God's creatures and now they stop people from seeing it." The exhibit is scheduled to reopen tomorrow at 8:30 A.M. if no contaminants are discovered.

Firewatch Tower Disappears Firewatch Tower #5 in the Lupitz Forest 60 miles east of Novada has been lost, as have several other structures in the area around it. The structures are believed to be the latest victims in a series of landslides caused by a combination of heavy rains and seismic activity in the area. Forest Ranger Arkady Gajdos of the NPA said in an interview "It's a two day hike out into the woods, and the entire time you're always thinking you'll see it soon. It's the tallest thing in the area not counting the mountain. Something like that just getting shoved out of the way, never to be seen again? Mother Nature knows how to keep her kids in line." A new tower is scheduled to be constructed by mid-2021 assuming the ground stabilizes by January. Fateena el-Jabour
Darin Slifkin Still At Large Darin Slifkin, the sole survivor of a three-man prison escape last month, has yet to be tracked down by police. Slifkin, who had been in prison for two counts of attempted murder and distribution of controlled substances, is believed to have murdered his two fellow escapees before fleeing the scene in a waiting vehicle. His physical description is as follows: 5 feet and 7 inches in height, weighs 138 pounds, brown hair, green eyes, small scar on left forearm. The suspect is considered dangerous and is likely armed. He is currently believed to still be within the country but is likely attempting to flee it, possibly through one of the several drug cartels he is known to have affiliated with. Natalia Drevin
Drambenburg Gains Presence in Zalluabed Drambenburg and Zalluabed have recently signed a military agreement allowing Drambenburg to establish naval bases within Zalluabed. This has caused significant tensions throughout the Albarine Sea, especially involving the Tarijar Strait which connects the Albarine Sea and the Toyana Ocean. Several nations, including Emmiria and Albarine, have denounced the action and have expressed a willingness to forcefully prevent Drambenburgian military vessels from utilizing the strait if diplomatic talks stall. Furthermore, Zalluabed has announced plans to close their embassies in both Emmiria and Albarine until they agree to freely permit Drambenburgian naval vessels into the strait, further raising tensions. The Tarijar Strait is one of the busiest waterways in the world and militarization of it would disrupt trade and compromise the military security of many nations in Southern Adula. The situation is currently peaceful but tense and diplomatic talks are ongoing. Geoffrey Zemlin

Mariners Defeat Smelters 4-3 By Eric Dragoon The first soccer match of the year saw the Mariners square up against the Novodan Smelters in the closest game the two teams have had since 2003. The game began as the last six had: with the Smelters quickly gaining a solid two-point lead. The retirement of the Smelters' star-player, Ferdinand "Firebird" Fichte, last did not have as much of an effect on the team's ability as many Mariners fans had hoped. Nevertheless, the score was tied 2-2 by halftime and both teams had appeared nearly evenly matched. Following halftime, the teams remained tied, pushing the score up to 3-3. Then, with 14 seconds of gametime left, Niko Polyak of the Mariners scored a 76 yard goal, winning the game and setting a new league record for longest goal in a competitive match, beating out the previous record of 62 yards set by Sokol Kantorowicz in 1987.
Cargo Ship Attacked by Pirates By Ludwig von Hayek Bulk carrier vessel Východ slnka v Navocalco departed Piva early Tuesday morning bound for Papineau, Alutiana carrying a cargo of raw materials. At 10:42 P.M. last night, after entering the Emmiria Sea, a small watercraft of unknown origin began approaching the ship, ignoring radio communications to keep their distance. As the small vessel closed in on the ship, several shots from automatic rifles impacted the side of the Východ slnka v Navocalco. In response, the crew began spraying the craft with high-power water cannons which succeeded in driving off the craft. After informing the Emmirian Navy of the pirate attack, the ship continued on it's journey and is expected to arrive on schedule. After the most recent pirate attacks on Durnian cargo vessels in March and August of 2020, many fear that pirate attacks may once again become a regular threat to Durnian shipping.
Ancient Grave Discovered in Park By Marta Savenko 12 Cedar Park in Eastern Kavyat, normally a small venue used for picnics, playdates, and an annual charity concert, has also been discovered to be the home of several buried soldiers. The men, believed to be mercenaries, are estimated to have died in the 200's AD, likely following a skirmish during the expansion of Yuran into the area. Despite the age of the graves, they were remarkably well-preserved, to the point that researchers were able to discern the items they were buried with, which included a small necklace, a broken dagger, and the remains of a dog. The remains were carefully exhumed and transported to Kalach College of Engineering for examination and are scheduled to be reburied at Headwater Cemetery on the 5th during a public ceremony.

Sand Imports Raise Environmental Concerns 2020 saw national imports of sand reach a record P£92 million, the most since 2014. The material is mainly used in construction, specifically in the creation of concrete and asphalt. While many see sand as a nearly inexhaustible resource, the type of sand required for the manufacture of concrete, known as "marine sand" makes up only a fraction of the world's total supply. This sand is sourced from riverbeds, lakes, and the ocean floor, which raises concerns about the effect this has on the surrounding environment. The erosion caused by sand mining leaves coastal areas vulnerable to flooding and further exacerbates the problem when popular beaches import new sand to replenish what they've lost. While restrictions on sand mining in the Bay of Morevo and Lake Gravenna have helped stymie the decay of the Durnian coast, they have also led to an increase in foreign sand imports, of which a large percentage is likely mined illegally. Renewable alternatives to sand imports are being implemented but none so far are commercially viable. Fateena el-Jabour
Steam Pipe Ruptures Under Steele Ave Residents, motorists, and passersby were shocked Tuesday night when, at around 2:00 A.M., a large steam pipe under the street ruptured, shooting a massive cloud of steam and scalding water 40 feet into the air. No one was killed but 16 people were injured, mainly with 1st and 2nd degree burns. The most likely reason for the explosion was a phenomenon known as "water knocking" which occurs when condensation forms inside of the pipe and accelerates to high speed before impacting a bend or valve. This causes effects ranging from knocking sounds to ruptured pipes, which was what occurred Tuesday night. These explosions occur on average once a year and continue to show the weaknesses of the city's deteriorating steam pipe network. In response to the latest explosion, Mayor Nasha Polykova released a statement promising to phase out the century-old system, saying: "Many of these pipes were laid when the city was lit by gas lamps and travelled in horse-drawn wagons. Where they once allowed the city to grow they now only hold us back." While efforts to phase the system out are underway, experts predict it will be decades before the system is fully replaced by more modern technologies. Natalia Drevin
Museum Opens Exhibit Based Entirely on Plants The Tomáš Maliar Art Museum has recently opened its newest exhibit, titled "Nature's Beauty", which consists entirely of artwork created from living plants. The artwork on display includes a series of masterwork topiaries by renowned gardeners Ivan Alexander and Peter Krauss, all of which were produced specifically for this exhibit. Also on display are copies of several famous artworks made by sowing grass, flowers, and moss in detailed patterns, all created by Josef Široký. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a 25 year old oak tree carefully grown to form a statue depicting a woman holding a potted flower, simply titled "To Be", grown by a team of students from Steunhal University. The exhibit is open to the public but opens and closes on its own schedule to allow the plants to be cared for properly. Visitors are warned that the air in the exhibit contains high concentrations of allergens which may cause allergic reactions and respiratory discomfort after extended exposure. Valko Kowalski
